The Fish Room

My original plan was to breed guppies to sell but there isn't a lot of demand for guppies in New Zealand.

Guppies are horny little fish, well the males are. They breed (produce fry) about every month, ranging from 1 to 50 (or more), so people that get guppies as pets soon find themselves with lots of guppies.

They are very soothing fish to watch, especially when they play in the current produce by the filter.
Some people breed very fancy guppies, others wild type. Joe bloggs usually ends up with inbred guppies which have the 3 black dots on their sides but can still have colourful tail fins.
I try not to imbred to much and try to keep yellow, blue and orange guppies.

Usually these guys love to come to the front of the tank but aren't always photogenic.

guppy tank
This is the community tank housing mostly guppies but also has neons etc in.
It doesn't look like it but it is a 3 ft tank.

The filter used for this tank is an external canister filter but I also have a small sponge filter in there more for aeration.

The air pump in the picture is only temporary and feeds air to the top 3 tanks (3ft, grow out and hospital tank)

Plants are Ambulia.

Above are the two 2ft tanks which I use for breeding the guppies. I also have a grow out tank for the new borns but catching them can be a mission.
These tanks are bare bottom which makes cleaning easier, the plants are either grown in shot type glasses or just weighted down and they sit on the bottom. This method of growing the plants makes for real slow growing, unlike community tank where the plants grow super fast.
All tanks are at 25 degrees C (about 77 F) except the grow out tank which is at 28 C (84 F).
Each of these tanks contain two large sponge filters.
